HSS Review Team Delivers Draft Report to Lab

The DOE HSS team returned to Berkeley Lab last week to discuss the draft report of their independent oversight inspection of this lab. The draft is comprehensive and contains important findings and numerous opportunities for improvement. It also contains many positive statements, including recognition of the actions taken by Berkeley Lab and the Site Office to achieve needed improvements in safety, as well as recognition that management, scientific staff, and workers demonstrate support for safety and for making necessary improvements. The elements of the lab that were reviewed received “Effective Performance” and “Needs Improvement” ratings, and no ratings of “Significant Weakness” were issued in the draft. The inspection report will be placed on our website when the document has been finalized, and Lab management will outline required steps to ensure the entire lab benefits from lessons learned from the HSS review.
