Shop Safety: Failed Work Bench

cart image

Recently a researcher began to move a mobile work bench when it collapsed (see photo). It had approximately 80 lbs. of equipment on it and the brakes were released. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and there was only minor damage to the equipment, but there was potential for much greater injury and damage. The manufacturer of this bench is Lista (http://www.listacabinets.com).

These models of work bench have been used for many years, sometimes with very heavy loads, but no similar incident has been reported prior to this occurrence. The unit that failed was a recent purchase and closer inspection revealed several problems with the new design. These problems include: (1) a much weaker attachment of the cross-piece to the ends; (2) a two-part adjustable cross-piece instead of a single piece construction; and (3) fewer and smaller screws to attach the table top (see photos here)

After a tour of the ALS workspaces, only one other unit was found with the same defects, and it was pulled it out of service. Nevertheless, EH&S is asking all workers to inspect their benches to make sure they do not have similar problems. Also, the Lab is in contact with the manufacturer to determine follow-up actions. In the meantime, no more order of these mobile unit work benches should be placed with this vendor.
